Hair Product Review: AG Sets You Straight

admin on August 20th, 2008

AG Set it Straight Hair Straightening Product

Anyone with curly or wavy hair knows that blow drying and flat ironing alone does not a straight hairstyle make. In order to really style those waves into silky submission you need the right type of hair product. As someone with wavy hair, I?ve tried many a product in an effort to find one that straightens my hair without making it feel like sludge.

Today I?m reviewing AG?s Set It Straight?a liquid hair straightening product. What I love about this product is its lightweight feel. Some smoothing balms are of a creamier consistency and feel much to heavy in the hair. While that type of hair straightening product is OK for really coarse, frizzy hair those with fine hair will find it too overwhelming.

The AG Set it straight did an awesome job of smoothing my hair while I blow dried and my hair was very silky and smooth afterwards. I only needed to touch up the ends with my flat iron (saving me time and stress on my hair) and I still managed a great deal of volume with little effort.

Who This Product is Meant For: Those with fine curly/wavy hair will absolutely love AG’s Set It Straight for it’s ability to straighten your hair while not feeling heavy or greasy. I’d even recommend this for those with thicker hair and have them combine this with a little extra helping of an anti-frizz serum mixed in. Anyone looking for a smooth style AND volume should definitely give this one a try.

You can find it at many professional salons or go to AG?s Website to find a location near you that stocks this awesome hair product.

Curling Your Hair with a Flat Iron

admin on August 10th, 2008

flat ironOk?aren?t flat irons supposed to be used to straighten your hair? Oh please?stop thinking so one dimensional. :) ? A good flat iron can be good for so much more than just smooth hair.

?

A good flat iron should have beveled, or rounded, edges to the ceramic plates. Those rounded edges ensure that you don?t get any demarcation or ?kinks? in your hair no matter which way you twist it. Use those rounded edges on your good old flat iron to create sexy flips or funky curls.

?

Lord knows I love me a multipurpose hair product or tool. So stop toting around a flat iron and a curling iron to get a multitude of looks and start making that flat iron do double duty to create both straight and curly hairstyles.

?

This great post over at Stylebell will tell you what products you?ll need and what technique to use in order to create some awesome waves with a tool once thought only to walk the straight and narrow.

?

QotD: So what do you think? Did you like the results? Would you use a flat iron over a curling iron to create waves in your hair? Let me know in the comments.

Black Trendy Hairstyles

admin on July 2nd, 2008

Today?s focus is on black trendy hairstyles. The trend is still strong towards relaxed black hairstyles but I did throw in some natural ones for those who don?t want to deal with chemical relaxers.

Relaxed Styles

Alicia Keys

It just doesn?t get sexier than this. Alicia is rockin? one super-sexy hairstyle. To get your own version of Alicia Keys? hairstyle apply a smoothing balm to damp hair and blow dry with a large round bristle brush. Next curl two inch sections of hair with a medium sized curling iron. Only go half-way up?leave the roots straight to avoid too much volume there. When you?re done curling coat your hands with a light hair wax and gently mold curls into place, separating a few for variety.

Jada Pickett Smith

I am lovin? this dramatically angled bob hairstyle on Jada. The length difference from front to back is very dramatic. This black trendy hairstyle is perfect for those who have relaxed hair and want to make a style impact without a ?fussy? hairstyle.

Kelly Rowland

Now that?s some serious diva hair Kelly is sporting. This cut works because of its clean lines. The short blunt bangs frame the face and draw attention to the eyes. The key to this hairstyle is having very healthy hair and using high quality, shine enhancing styling products to make that black hairstyle sparkle.

Play Peek a Boo with Hair Color

Do you want to experiment with hair color but don?t want too dramatic of a change? Take a style cue from Ashanti and have your stylist place random streaks of contrasting color in your hairstyle. Two or three max should do it for the best effect. This way you have a trendy black hairstyle without the commitment of root upkeep.

Natural hair

Hate the hassle of using relaxers? The trend this season is for natural and touchable hair and that goes for black hairstyles as well. Leave the weave behind, shun the chemical solutions and go au natural, baby. Trim hair short, keeping it especially cropped on the sides and back. Use hair putty to mold and sculpt the top layers to give soft hold.

Note: This hairstyle will only work if you have great skin and a smaller face shape.

I mentioned that the trend in Caucasian hair is to keep things natural, yet many of the black hairstyles being worn today still reflect a strong use of chemical relaxers. Where do you stand on this issue?relaxed or natural, what?s better?

Hairstyle of the Day: Thandi Newton

admin on May 5th, 2008

Today’s Hairstyle of the Day is Thandi Newton

Thandi is showing off some shiny curls in today?s hairstyle of the day. Those with natural curl take note?look what a great layered hair cut can do for your hair type!

The hair is cut shoulder length when wet to allow for ?spring up? once it dries and long layers are added to take out the extra bulk and carve some nice shape into those thick and curly locks.

To style apply a generous amount of a curl defining cream to really lock in those curls while banishing frizz. Attach a diffuser to your blow drier and gently scrunch curls into place. For mega volume flip your head upside down while scrunching?gives those roots some added volume.

When your hair is dry coat the palms of your hands with a small amount of styling wax and scrunch again to remove any fly away hairs and promote shine.

Quick and Easy Curly Hairstyles

admin on April 20th, 2008

It?s a law of nature?everyone who has straight hair wants curly hair and everyone with curly hair wishes it would turn poker straight. If you?ve got curly hair why not make peace with it by wearing one of those super easy to achieve curly hairstyles.

Beach-y Waves

Long curly hair doesn?t have to be hard work. This summer let your hair have a beach holiday by faking beach-like waves. Create this sun and sand curly hairstyle by misting your hair with water that has sea salt dissolved in it. Mist all your hair until damp and scrunch curls into place. Whenever possible let your hair air dry for the best effect but when you?re in a time crunch slap a diffuser on the end of your blow drier and scrunch curls until barely damp.

Reshape Those Curls

Just because Mother Nature gave you natural spiral curls doesn?t mean you have to keep them that size. Reshaping your curls via Velcro or hot rollers is an easy way to create a more relaxed curly hairstyle. Apply a smoothing balm to damp hair and wrap in medium sized rollers that will reshape the curl but not try to straighten it out entirely (more chances of frizz then). Let your hair air dry or speed up the process by blow drying rollers. Once the hair is set carefully remove the rollers and finger comb your new, sexy curls into place. This type of curly hairstyle is a great option for evenings out when you want a more glam look.

Go Topless

Going with the minimum amount of clothing ensures that even if you?re hair looks like crap, no one will care. Oh, I?m just kidding!!! Despite the fact this woman appears to be performing a sequel to 9 ? weeks all by herself, her short and sassy curly hairstyle is a fab one. Use a curl boosting spray and gently scrunch and mold curls into place with your fingers while blow drying with a diffuser. When the hair is just dry coat the palms of your hands with a small amount of hair wax. Scrunch your curls once again to lightly coat them and remove any frizz. Resist the urge to use hairspray?sticky curls are SO out of date.

Many times the right products can make or break curly hairstyles. Do you have a favorite hair product you use to tame your curly hair? If so share it in the comments section.
