A Close-Up of Kelly Clarksons Hairstyles
Now and again I use my favorite keyword research tool to find out what types of hair related topics people are searching for. Well, imagine my surprise when I discovered that 1665 people a day are searching for the words Kelly Clarkson hairstyles. Well, far be it from me to keep a lady apart from her favorite hairstyle.
Girl Gone Blonde

While we mostly know Kelly as a brunette this short stint as a blonde was a refreshing change. Here Kelly Clarksons hairstyle is a layered bob. The ends are razored to remove excess bulk and better frame the face without overwhelming it. The bangs are left super long and left to frame her face. What really makes this style is the multi-dimensional color with a honey brown base with light pastel blonde highlights.
Craving Chocolate

Kelly goes to the dark side with this rich chocolate brown hair color. Her hair is long with volume boosting layers throughout which are set in large curls with a large barrel curling iron. Define those big waves with a little styling wax and mist with a light hold hair spray. A very yummy Kelly Clarkson hairstyle indeed.
Threes the Charm

Image details: CMT Giants Honoring Reba McEntire - Arrivals served by picapp.com
Our third example of the every-changing Kelly Clarkson hairstyle is by far our favorite. Displayed on her websites homepage Kelly is rocking a short and sassy style. The color is similar to her long chocolate version but with strategically placed subtle highlighting around the face to add dimension. Though her hairstyle shown here is set for an evening look in retro style curls the cut is very ragged and razored with wispy length left around the sides. We HEART this hairstyle big time and hope she keeps it for a while.
Kelly Clarkson has had a lot of different hairstyles and colors in her time. Whats your favorite Kelly Clarkson hairstyle and why?

Creating Volume in Hairstyles for Fine Hair
Fine hairits often anything but fine when youre trying to style it. Limp locks can seem like a never ending nightmare but dont frethere are some volume inducing tips when creating hairstyles for fine hair.
Choose Your Product Wisely
Because fine hair is essentially caused by thinner hair strands and/or fewer hair strands than youd like to have fine hair is easily weighed down. This means you cant just reach for any old hair products and expect them to treat your fine hair right. If you want to make the most out of your hair styles for fine hair you need to start by using the right products.
Use shampoos that are specifically designed for fine hair or are volumizing. These shampoos should use different ingredients that ones for dry or curly hair and wont contain such heavy moisturizers. Also, you should skip the thick conditioners and instead opt for a spray in/leave in conditioner. It will give you all the moisturizing your fine hair needs but without the heavy build up. It will also act as a bit of protectant against styling damage.
Styling products should be light weight as well. Opt for volumizing mousses or spray in hair gels. Concentrate the product at the roots for lift and use very sparingly. Stay away from cream based products at all costs.
Better Blowdrying
To create great hairstyles for fine hair you need to know how to blow dry your hair for maximum volume. If youre creating a sleek style use a large round brush and aim the nozzle of your blow drier directly at the roots while holding the hair away from your scalp. This will create a bit of a bend right at the roots which gives natural looking body.
If youre going for a tousled look flip your head upside down and massage your scalp in a circular motion with the palms of your hands. This rubbing technique lifts the hair from the scalp and creates a bit of a natural cushion.
Styling Tools to Use
Velcro or hot rollers can be a fine-haired girls best friend. They create easy volume and body and always make hair appear thicker. The trick is to use larger rollers at the top of your head for maximum root lift and smaller ones at the bottom to create luscious waves. Once curls are set remove the rollers, flip your head over and tousle with your hands. Give your roots a quick misting with a dry aerosol hairspray to hold the lift and flip back upright. Resist the urge to plaster your hair in placesoft and touchable hair is the key.
Do you have fine hair and its driving you crazy? Ask your fine hair questions here and Ill be happy to answer them.

How to Breakup with Your Hairstylist
Like all relationships, some are beneficial and last a lifetime while others turn sour and need to be severed. If youre not getting the hairstyles you want from your stylist anymore it may be time for a breakup. But if you think youre hairstylist wont take it personally youre in for a shock. Were a passionate bunch and we need to be let down easyespecially if you know the stylist socially or plan to start visiting a new stylist in the same salon.
Here are some tips for leaving your stylist and still remaining friends (hopefully.)
- Give them every opportunity to make things right. Just as you wouldnt dump a significant other without warning you should make sure youve voiced your displeasure with your hairstylist before calling it quits. If youve sat and silently suffered but never spoke up then youre just as guilty as your stylist. Let them know youre not happy with the direction theyve taken with your hair and give them one last chance to rectify it. If this doesnt do the trick then youre free to look elsewhere for hair care. Just rememberif you dont say something they wont know. And no martyr ever had good hair (Joan of Arc anyone?)
- Be honest. If youre planning to leave your stylist for a different one within the same salon youll need to be honest about why youre changing stylists. This is because, no matter how friendly the stylists seem with each other, theres always animosity when one stylist is seen to be poaching a client from another. Tell them youve enjoyed your time with them (its OK to fib a bit) but you feel another stylist will be more in tune with your hair care needs.
- Decide if you need a total breakup or just need another stylist on the side. Now this one can be tricky but if done right can make everyone happy. Perhaps your stylist specializes in colorsand you love the hair color they give youbut its the cut you cant stand. Tell them how much you love what they do color-wise to their hair but that youd like to try another stylist for your cuts. In many upscale salons this is totally acceptable and allows each stylist to focus on the area of hairstyling they are best at. Golden ruleif you see other clients using different stylist for blow dries, colors and cuts youve got the green light to do the same.
- Have another hairstylist picked out. If you cant divide your time between two stylist then make the move the smart way. If youre staying within the same salon you dont want to appear to be too much of a stylist-hopper so have a game plan. While with your soon-to-be-ex-hairstylist look around at the clients of other stylists in the salon and choose one whose work you like. This way you can hopefully make the move only once and settle in with your new stylist quickly.
- When you just cant face your former stylistfind a new salon. If your stylist has screwed up big time and the relationship is as bitter as a stood-up bride at the alter its time to take your hair to another locale. In cases like this its best to have a fresh start at an entirely new salon. In cases like this poll friends and family whose hairstyles you like and ask for references. That way youll hopefully choose a little more wisely this time and not be entering into a rebound relationship with a new stylist.

Hairstyle Trends: Bangs Are Back
In case you missed itbangs are back with a vengeance. Long ones, short ones, skinny onesyou get the idea.
So why are bangs so hot? Well, for one they do a lot to frame the face and set off the eyes. Many times a hairstyle without bangs can just end up showing too much face. Bangs are also an easy way to create a new look with your hairstyle without getting scissor happy.
For those who arent sure if bangs are for them try the longer version of the side-swept bang. These add just a hint of bang across the forehead without being too heavy. They also blend well with long layers in long hairstyles.
Blunt bangs for the brave are so hot right now. Those that can pull off very sharp and defined hairstyles should go for it and pair a super blunt bang with a blunt bobso chic!
Wispy bangs are the perfect choice for those with smaller faces or who hate a lot of hair on their forehead. These types of bangs soften short hairstyles and medium hairstyles alike.
Just to prove what a difference a simple bang can make have a look at Christina Ricci with and without bangs:
Without Bangs:

With Bangs:

I think Christina is gorgeous but from the moment I laid eyes on her years ago I thought to myself That girl needs some bangs. Christina has a very round and prominent forehead which just seems to take over her whole cute little face. With bangs it softens her and adds balance to her overall look.
QotD: Whats your opinion? Do you prefer Christina Riccis hairstyle with or without bangs?

Wedding Hairstyles: Three Brides, Three Looks
Choosing a wedding hairstyle that suits both you and the theme of your wedding is extremely important. Besides being the icing on the cake, the right wedding hairstyle can be the difference between looking like a polished bride and a mismatched one. Here are three very different and distinctive wedding hairstyles to give you ideas when choosing the right one for you.
The Half Updo Wedding Hairstyle
This is a very popular hairstyle right now and wonderful for a romantic wedding hairstyle look. The stylist also gives some really great information on when to wash your hair, how long it will take to achieve this look in the salon (so book accordingly) and what type of dress this hairstyle suits.
Elegant Wedding Updo
This is perfect for a bride who loves to look totally glamorous on her big day. While this style might be too “done” for some, if your wedding is going to be a very elegant and formal event and your dress reflects that, I think this wedding hairstyle would fit in beautifully.
Beach Wedding Hairstyle
This is the perfect wedding hairstyle for a beach or casual wedding. Please believe me when I say that if you’re getting married on a beach you want to look the part. My niece got married in the Dominican this past winter. Along with about 4 other brides during our two week stay. Some went for the totally formal look and, quite frankly they looked out of place and very uncomfortable.
I opted for a much more relaxed hairstyle when creating my niece’s wedding hairstyle and she looked like the perfect beach bride—and got countless compliments on her hair. If you’re having a beach wedding check out this beautiful yet more casual version of the wedding hairstyle.
So which bride were you or which bride are you planning to be? Romantic, elegant or casual? Tell us in the comments!

Hair Care Myths Dispelled
There are nearly as many hair care myths floating around as there are hair care products. As a former hairdresser it never failed to amaze me the bogus hair care tips that that my clients took for truth. Yeah, like gooping mayonnaise in your hair is going to make it healthy. It might make it crave bacon, lettuce and tomato to complete that sandwich but healthy? Please!
The best defense against unhealthy hair is good old fashioned facts. In the spirit of putting these B.S. myths to bed for good I’m tackling five of what I consider to be the top hair care and hair care product myths out there. This week’s podcast will separate the fact from the fiction when it comes to hair care.

Prom Hairstyles: 1920’s Inspired Glam
Prom will be here before you know it so you’d better plan your prom hairstyle before it’s too late. If you plan on doing your own hair you’ll need to make sure you have all the supplies you need and if you’re booking with a stylist make sure you’ve already made the appointment to avoid disappointment. You also need to actually find a prom hairstyle—but not just any hairstyle! You need the perfect hairstyle for your special night.
Today I want to show you a video I found that demonstates how to create an incredible 1920’s inspired prom hairstyle. It was apparently inspired by Katherine Heigl and is the perfect prom updo if you’re looking to go glam.
Pay close attention to how the stylist uses the curling iron if you plan on doing this style yourself or are having a friend help (have them watch the video too!) If a stylist is doing your hair tell them you want Katherine Heigl’s chignon—and print off the picture below.

Ok, without further adieu I give you a sexy and sophisticated prom hairstyle: The 1920’s chignon.

Be Frugal and Fabulous with your Hairstyles
Think looking like a million bucks should cost you that? Well, only if you need as much plastic surgery as Tori Spelling. For the rest of us we can cut some corners while cutting our hair and save some money for more important things—like a great pair of shoes to go with your new haircut.
Cheap Blowouts
If you like to regularly get your hair blown out, or just need it styled for a special event but don’t want to shell out a wad of cash for a blow out try looking for cosmetology schools in your area. The senior students attending hairdressing school are usually only a month or so away from graduation and will have the skills to give you a great style.
Get Your Hair Cut by Top Salons for Free
I came across this great idea from stylist Louis Lacari at his blog. He suggests checking with top end salons in your area for their class nights. These nights are dedicated to giving the assistant stylists the practice to hone their skills. All the cutting is overseen by the salon’s experienced stylists so you needn’t worry about getting a shabby cut.
This is an awesome idea if you’ve been dying to score a hot hair cut from a star stylist but can’t afford their price tag. Many salon assistants extend their training by a year or longer under the tutelage of a specific stylist so getting your hair cut by their assistant is the next best thing to the real thing.
