Creating a Messy Look with Layered Hairstyles
Long layered hairstyles are everywhere right now and one of the popular ways to wear this type of hairstyle is the messy look. Now there’s a technique to creating a messy look in layered hairstyles beyond just shaking your hands through the hairstyle. You need the right product and the right method of applying that product to get the look just right.
In the Youtube video below the stylist shows an easy way to define your long layered hairstyle and get that great piece-y look. Pay careful attention to how far up the sections of hair she goes—not to the root, people! That’ll just make your hair look greasy.
Instead, concentrate on the last 1/3 of your hair’s length for best results. Also—the stylist in this video started at the front sides of the hair. This is OK if you’re already familiar with how much product your hair needs to achieve this look but if you tend to be a little heavy-handed with the styling product start at the back layers where the hair tends to be thicker. That way you won’t overload those front layers into a greasy mess.

QotD: Next week I’m starting a series called Hair Disasters How To. I’m going to be using the story of someone who went to the salon thinking “Wow—I’m going to get a great new look” and left thinking “Where’s the nearest paper bag store?” My hopes in featuring hair disasters like this is to help you a) avoid these yourself and b) let you know what your rights are when a hair cut goes all to hell.
So here’s where you come in. Do you have a hair disaster story of your own? If so email it to me at herhairstyleblog (at) yahoo.com (replace the at with @ of course) with the words “Hair Disaster” in the subject line and tell me about it. I’ll feature these stories plus advice on how to handle this type of situation during the month of June. At the end of the month I’ll ask you, my wonderful readers, to vote on the worst hair disaster story of the bunch. The winner will receive some hair goodies from me. So send in your stories, make sure you’ve signed up the rss feed so you don’t miss any, and tell your friends because we’re about to turn hair disasters into hair schwag.

Hairstyle of the Day: Thandi Newton
Today’s Hairstyle of the Day is Thandi Newton
Thandi is showing off some shiny curls in today’s hairstyle of the day. Those with natural curl take note—look what a great layered hair cut can do for your hair type!
The hair is cut shoulder length when wet to allow for “spring up” once it dries and long layers are added to take out the extra bulk and carve some nice shape into those thick and curly locks.
To style apply a generous amount of a curl defining cream to really lock in those curls while banishing frizz. Attach a diffuser to your blow drier and gently scrunch curls into place. For mega volume flip your head upside down while scrunching—gives those roots some added volume.
When your hair is dry coat the palms of your hands with a small amount of styling wax and scrunch again to remove any fly away hairs and promote shine.

Layered Hair Cuts: Why You Need One
For the longest time anyone with long hair wore it one length like an ode to the seventies. Well, that fad has gone the way of the tie-dyed shirt and now layers are making a comeback big time.
Today’s hairstyles are all about movement and styling options. Long, one length hair is just so…boring! Layered hair cuts allow you to create volume, play with different directions and combine lengths to create hair styles that are interesting to the eye.
Even Short Hair Needs Layers
Layers are popping up in practically every hair style today. Even the once rigid bob hairstyle with its blunt lines is getting a makeover into a softer style thanks to layering at the ends. This creates a tapered look at the ends that better frames the face and allows for playful flips if you’re so inclined.

Want the ultimate in layered hair cuts? The short to medium length hair cut that is layered with a straight razor is the cut for those who want to make a statement. Think styles like Lisa Rinna’s with their wispy and flippy layers that manage to look tousled yet put together all at the same time. These styles are especially fun because when you incorporate different panels of hair color into these layers the effects can range from subtly enhances to surprisingly bold.
Long on Style
If you wear your hair long you definitely need a layered hair cut. Having layers cut into the last three to four inches of your hair adds shape and lift to your style. What’s hot right now is to concentrate the layering around the face. Whether you wear your hair all down, half up or all up face framing layers are what’s in style for accentuating and softening your style.
What to do with that Long Layered Hair Cut
I found a really cool video over at Stylebell blog that shows you how to create beachy waves in your long layered hair. This style is so hot for summer as it mimics that “just came from the beach” casual look without getting sand in your shoes. See it here and then let me know your thoughts on the video.
